Softball Game Preview: Ithaca Yellowjackets vs. Millington Cardinals

Ithaca is 0-4 against Millington since May of 2022 but things could change on Wednesday. The Yellowjackets will head out to take on the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. Ithaca will be looking to extend their current 12-game winning streak.

Ithaca had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Hemlock on Monday. The Yellowjackets were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Huskies. The Yellowjackets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matches by six runs or more this season.

Ivy Davenport was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

In other batting news, Ithaca let Maeli Akin and Kennedi Ryan run wild. Akin went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Ryan got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Ryan has posted since back in April. Karley Braman also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Millington posted their closest win since May 13, 2024 on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out Hancock 12-11.

Ithaca pushed their record up to 21-3 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Millington, their record is now 11-7.

Ithaca suffered a grim 17-3 defeat to Millington in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Can the Yellowjackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
