Basketball Game Preview: Antonito Trojans vs. La Veta Redhawks

The Antonito Trojans will head out to square off against the La Veta Redhawks at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

Antonito is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Primero on Saturday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Antonito was outmatched by Primero and fell 58-12. The Trojans were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-4.

Despite the defeat, Antonito saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Shyanne Martinez posted four points.

Meanwhile, on TuesdayCentennial kept up with La Veta until halftime, but afterwards: not so much. La Veta blew past Centennial 45-24. The Redhawks have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 21 points or more this season.

La Veta's win came from a few key players Antonito will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Sarah Walters, who earned 11 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in assists (four). Another player making a difference was Aspen Autry, who had 18 points.

La Veta was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Antonito's loss was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-1. As for La Veta, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Everything went Antonito's way against La Veta in their previous matchup back in February of 2020, as Antonito made off with a 60-36 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Antonito since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
