Basketball Recap: Eric Chavez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Canon City over Widefield

Canon City lost against Widefield back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Canon City Tigers took a hard 60-45 fall against the Widefield Gladiators. The Tigers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Canon City lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Eric Chavez, who went 8-for-13 on his way to 19 points and three steals. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kai Fingers, who posted six points and seven boards.

Widefield was led to victory by Trevin Stemler and Jaylen Sankey. Stemler dropped a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds, while Sankey went 7-for-11 en route to 18 points and five steals. Sankey has become a key player for Widefield: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least five steals, but 6-9 otherwise. Tate Washington was another key player, putting up nine points.

Canon City's defeat dropped their record down to 7-14. As for Widefield, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-10.

While Canon City had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
