Softball Preview: South Spartans vs. Lawndale Cardinals
South is on a five-game streak of home losses, Lawndale a 23-game streak of away losses (dating back to last season), but someone's luck is about to change. The South Spartans will take on the Lawndale Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
While South couldn't quite beat Wiseburn- Da Vinci last Friday, the two-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 12-point loss they were dealt two weeks ago. South fell just short of Wiseburn- Da Vinci by a score of 9-7.
Katie Barrett was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. Barrett has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive pitching appearances. Barrett was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Hina Usuda made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Isabella Cacatian, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Lawndale's offense. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 19-0 to Torrance, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
South's defeat dropped their record down to 3-10. As for Lawndale, their loss dropped their record down to 0-11.
