Softball Recap: Wilby Wildcats vs. Waterbury Career Academy Spartans

Wilby had lost 13 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 0-14 to make it 14. They came up short against the Waterbury Career Academy Spartans, falling 18-5. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-1 back in April.

As for Waterbury Career Academy, their victory ended an eight-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-13. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for their hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

For Waterbury Career Academy's part, Janessa Campos was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off two hits. That's the most strikeouts Campos has posted since back in April. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three stolen bases, and three runs. That home run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Trinitey Sanchez was incredible, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jenesys Soto, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Coming up, Wilby will face off against Kaynor Tech at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Waterbury Career Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
