Baseball Recap: Leon Takes a Loss

Leon had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 12-13 to make it four. They fell just short of the Marianna Bulldogs by a score of 4-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 last Tuesday.

Brady Brown was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March.

On the hitting side, Leon saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Evans Franco, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

As for Marianna, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games.

On Marianna's side, Cody Byrd was a standout: he got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. Byrd has become a key player for the Bulldogs: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 8-10 otherwise. Landon Attaway also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Leon and Marianna are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Lions will take on Chiles at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Timberwolves' pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so Leon's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Marianna, they will square off against Chipley at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 7.6 runs per game this season.
