Preview: Mount Vernon Mustangs vs. Greenforest Eagles

Mount Vernon is 0-3 against Greenforest since January of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Mount Vernon Mustangs will take on the Greenforest Eagles at 4:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Mount Vernon comes in on four and Greenforest on seven.

Last Saturday, Mount Vernon earned a 60-49 win over Flint Hill. The win was all the more spectacular given Mount Vernon's disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 51st in Georgia, while Flint Hill is ranked fourth in Virginia).

Mount Vernon can attribute much of their success to Xavier Shegog, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Kj Garris, who scored 29 points along with six rebounds. Shegog is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sha'yah Goba, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.

Meanwhile, Greenforest was able to grind out a solid victory over Baldwin on Saturday, taking the game 62-53.

Mount Vernon's win was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.2 points per game. As for Greenforest, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.

Things could have been worse for Mount Vernon, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 68-53 loss to Greenforest when the teams last played back in February of 2018. Can Mount Vernon avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
