Basketball Recap: Elbert Comes Up Short

Elbert had lost seven straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 5-14 to make it eight. They had to suffer through an 88-19 loss at the hands of the Simla Cubs. The Bulldogs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 62-5.

Despite the loss, Elbert still got an impressive performance from Melanie Hermes, who posted 13 points. That was a full 68.4% of the Bulldogs' points, marking the eighth time in a row Hermes has had more than a third of the team's points.

As for Simla, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 19-0. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 66.3 points this season.

Simla's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Katie Gotschall led the charge by dropping a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Those 11 boards gave Gotschall a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Carlee Cox, who shot 64% from the field to rack up 14 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Elbert will face off against Rocky Mountain Lutheran at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Simla, they will challenge Burlington at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
