Basketball Recap: Monrovia Picks Up Fifth Consecutive Win

Monrovia entered their tilt with Western Boone on Monday with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. They took down the Western Boone Stars 54-36. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 132nd, while the Stars are ranked 304th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Monrovia's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zoie Walls, who went 9 of 16 on her way to 22 points along with five boards and four steals. Another player making a difference was Emery Newlin, who posted 12 points in addition to seven steals and six rebounds.

Monrovia smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Western Boone only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.

Despite the loss, Western Boone saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ally Lewis scored 19 points along with six boards and three steals. That was a full 52.8% of Western Boone's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Ila Stokes also deserves some recognition as she posted her first blocks of the season.

Monrovia's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-7. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.3 points per game. As for Western Boone, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-14.

Monrovia didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 62-33 victory against Greencastle on the 28th. As for Western Boone, they will take on North Montgomery at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
