Softball Recap: Northampton Turns Things Around After Road Loss

Northampton's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Easthampton/Hampshire on Wednesday. The Blue Devils put the hurt on the Monson Mustangs with a sharp 13-5 win. Considering the Blue Devils have won five matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Greta Lepore made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Northampton got a massive performance out of Avery Hicks, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and two stolen bases. Talia Garretson was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Northampton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Northampton's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 6-3. As for Monson, their loss dropped their record down to 4-4.

Northampton and Monson could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Massachusetts Rankings. The Blue Devils (ranked 52nd) will meet Chicopee (ranked tenth) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Monson will take on Belchertown at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (74 vs. 14).
