Basketball Recap: Madison Falls Despite Big Games from Jason Eighmey and Chance Penland

After flying high against Draughn last Friday, Madison came back down to earth. The Madison Patriots came up short against the Avery County Vikings on Tuesday, falling 70-49. The Patriots were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Vikings earlier this season, when they won 61-52.

Madison's loss came despite strong showings from Chance Penland and Jason Eighmey. Penland went 5 of 7 on his way to 10 points and five rebounds, while Eighmey posted seven points and eight boards. That's the most points Penland has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gavin Gault, who earned nine points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Madison smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Avery County to victory, but perhaps none more so than Oak Markland, who went 8 for 13 en route to 20 points and eight boards. Hank Johnson was another key player, going 6 of 9 on his way to 17 points and five rebounds.

The loss snapped Madison's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-10 record. As for Avery County, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 11-8.

Madison has already played their next contest, a 72-17 win against Rosman on the 5th. As for Avery County, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Owen at 7:30 p.m. One thing working in Owen's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
