The Lafayette Rams will face off against the Smithfield Packers at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Lafayette is headed out in good spirits considering the team just ended their winless streak on the road against Warhill on Friday. Lafayette blew past Warhill 9-2. The victory continues a trend for the Rams in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won six in a row.
Breccan O'Grady made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. O'Grady was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.
O'Grady wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Reed Smith, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits Smith has posted since back in April of 2024. Quinn Walton was another, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, Smithfield made easy work of Bruton on Friday and carried off a 14-3 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Packers.
Like Lafayette, Smithfield also got a great game from a two-way player: Walton Bondurant. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Bondurant was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nathan Lamarsche, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Another player making a difference was Nick Gaspar, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
Smithfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bruton only posted a batting average of .263.
Smithfield's record now sits at 2-0. As for Lafayette, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
Lafayette was able to grind out a solid win over Smithfield when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 4-0. Will Lafayette repeat their success, or does Smithfield has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
