Shawnee has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge the Shelby Whippets at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
With a playoff game on the line, Shawnee rose to the challenge on Saturday. They came out on top against the Roughriders by a score of 53-45.
Shawnee can attribute much of their success to Trevick Bertke, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds and three blocks, and Beckett Bertke, who scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Bertke is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 16 or more in the last four games he's played. Alex Goldsberry was another key contributor, scoring five points along with five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Shelby came tearing into Saturday's game with 16 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 62-52 victory over Lexington.
Shawnee pushed their record up to 19-6 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.7 points per game. As for Shelby, their victory bumped their record up to 23-2.
