Softball Recap: Lancaster Extends Winning Streak to Five

Lancaster hadn't done well against Essex recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Red Devils blew past the Trojans 17-6. The Red Devils might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Braelyn Johnson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Kelsie Cox and Kynleigh Wilson did most of the damage at the plate: Cox went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Wilson went 2-for-3 with five RBI, one run, and one double. Those five RBI gave Wilson a new career-high. Ayla Saunders was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.

The victory (which was Lancaster's fifth in a row) raised their record to 14-9. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Essex, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-12-1.

Lancaster does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Essex, they will square off against Westmoreland at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season.
