Preview: Wingfield Falcons vs. Velma Jackson Falcons
Wingfield is 0-3 against Velma Jackson since November of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Wingfield Falcons will head out on the road to face off against the Velma Jackson Falcons at 7:30 p.m. Wingfield comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Last Thursday, Wingfield was the victim of a rough 73-47 defeat at the hands of Brookhaven. While losing is never fun, Wingfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 293rd, while Brookhaven is ranked 32nd).
Despite the loss, Wingfield got a solid performance out of Martavius Bennett, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 17 rebounds. Those 22 points set a new season-high mark for him.
Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Velma Jackson, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 65-51 loss to Leake County on Friday.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Cameron Tate, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds. Joel Fleming was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Velma Jackson were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Wingfield's loss was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-10. Velma Jackson's record now sits at 4-7.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Wingfield hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 50.3 points per game. It's a different story for Velma Jackson, though, as they've been averaging only 39.3 points per game. The only thing between Wingfield and another offensive beatdown is Velma Jackson. Will they be able to keep them contained?
Wingfield came up short against Velma Jackson in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, falling 63-56. Can Wingfield avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
