Basketball Game Preview: South Laurel Cardinals vs. Whitley County Colonels

South Laurel has gone 10-0 against Whitley County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The South Laurel Cardinals will be playing at home against the Whitley County Colonels at 6:00 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Whitley County will be up against a hot South Laurel squad: the team just extended their winning streak to four. South Laurel blew past Corbin 52-32 on Tuesday. The Cardinals have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead South Laurel to victory, but perhaps none more so than Maci Messer, who went 8 for 16 en route to 19 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Messer's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jamie Buenaventura, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 10 points in addition to eight boards and three steals.

South Laurel was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Whitley County, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Wednesday. They blew past Williamsburg 59-14 on Tuesday. That 45 point margin sets a new team best for the Colonels this season.

Whitley County has also been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for South Laurel, they pushed their record up to 9-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

South Laurel strolled past Whitley County in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 by a score of 49-30. Does South Laurel have another victory up their sleeve, or will Whitley County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
