Basketball Recap: Soliana Gebremeskel's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Union Colony Prep over Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado

Union Colony Prep lost against Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado back in January of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Union Colony Prep Timberwolves took a 52-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado Archers. The Timberwolves have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Several Timberwolves players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Soliana Gebremeskel, who posted 19 points along with eight boards and four steals. The matchup was Gebremeskel's seventh in a row with at least 18 points. Jaelynn Valdez was another key player, putting up 11 points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Union Colony Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in seven consecutive contests.

Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Danica Candelaria out in front who shot 5-for-9 from deep and dropped a triple-double with 18 points, ten boards, and 11 assists. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Candelaria has scored at least a third of Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kizzy Thode, who dropped a triple-double with 14 points, ten rebounds, and ten steals.

Union Colony Prep's loss dropped their record down to 9-9. As for Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games. That somehow still isn't as good as their 13-4 record this season.

Union Colony Prep will take on Lyons at 5:30 p.m. on February 27th. Ascent Classical Academy Northern Colorado does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
