Texas pledge completes 83 percent of his passes as Greenies move to 2-0 on the season.

It only took three offensive plays for Arch Manning to get Newman (New Orleans, La.) on the board Friday night in a 42-20 win Friday over Riverside Academy (Reserve, La.). The five-star Texas pledge finished with four touchdown passes and added another on the ground as his Greenies improved to 2-0 on the season.

Manning completed 19 of his 23 pass attempts for 268 yards, improving to 27-5 as the starting quarterback at Newman.

Riverside scored on its first possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead before the Manning show began.

He completed his first two passes to seniors Kai Donaldson and three-star Texas commit Will Randle before rolling out for a dime to junior Peter Loop, who caught the ball in stride for a 34-yard touchdown to tie the game up.

After forcing a turnover, Newman took over with 5:01 left in the first half and proceeded to move the ball and melt the clock.
Manning hit junior Anthony Jones for a 27-yard gain on the second play of the drive and seven plays later, Manning again found Jones, this time for a 6-yard TD to give the Greenies a 14-7 lead with less than a minute to play in the half.

Newman started the second half with a reverse kickoff return that Austin-Jake Guillory took 60 yards to the Riverside 22.

One play later, Manning tossed his third TD of the night to Donaldson, who caught the ball in the corner of the end zone to give the Greenies a 21-7 lead early in the third.

On the next Riverside possession, the Rebels turned to Louisiana running back commit Elijah Davis. He finished with 285 yards and his second score helped cut the lead to 21-13.

It didn’t take long for Newman to respond. Loop flew down the field and caught a 53-yard strike from Manning to get deep into Rebel territory.

Facing a third and 10 from the 12, Manning took the snap and waited patiently in the pocket before turning toward the end zone. He juked a defender and ran in for a score to give Newman a 28-13 lead.

It wasn't long before Donaldson forced a fumble to start the fourth quarter and give Newman the ball back. Manning put the game out of reach with a 5-yard TD to fellow Longhorn commit Randle to take a 35-13 lead.

Sophomore Eli Friend extended the lead for Newman by running for a 39-yard TD in the games final minutes.

Manning now has 88 career touchdown passes. The Greenies will get ready for Benton next week.
