Game recap: Purvis High School Football Team defeats South Pike

MAGNOLIA, Miss. - Purvis (Miss.) jumped out to an early lead against South Pike (Magnolia, Miss.) and never looked back on the way to a 28-14 victory on Saturday.

The Tornadoes scored seven points in the first quarter. Purvis scored on a touchdown run by Thomaz Taylor.

After taking the lead on a Taylor touchdown run in the first quarter, PHS led 21-0 at the half.

The Tornadoes saw their 21-point halftime lead fall to 14 entering the fourth.



Jaxavian Holmes played well for the Eagles. The freshman wingback ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to two on the year.

Purvis' standout player in the win was Nathan Roseberry. The sophomore quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.

Coming into the game PHS had allowed 21.1 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding South Pike right around its season average of 11.5 points scored per game.

Purvis also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 33-6.

The loss comes after South Pike defeated Lawrence County 44-20 last week. The victory was a step in the right direction for PHS, which was coming off a 34-28 defeat at the hands of Tylertown in its previous game.

In a 4A Region 7 game next week South Pike (1-8) takes on North Pike, and Purvis (5-4) will go up against Lawrence County also in a 4A Region 7 game.
