Basketball Recap: Clinton King -Varner's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sweeny over Needville

Sweeny was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 53-50 heartbreaker at the hands of the Needville Bluejays. The Bulldogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bluejays apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Clinton King -Varner, who went 7 for 12 on his way to 23 points and seven rebounds. Tatum Waller was another key player, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards.

Needville was led to victory by James Schreck and Jaydon Ortiz. Schreck posted 17 points and five steals, while Ortiz went 7 of 13 en route to 17 points and three steals. The dominant performance gave Schreck a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jamarkus Jack, who scored no points along with seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds.

Sweeny's loss dropped their record down to 2-19. As for Needville, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-12 record this season.

Sweeny didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 52-50 victory against Bay City on the 23rd. Needville has also already played their next matchup, a 65-62 defeat against El Campo on the 21st.
