Baseball Game Preview: Cibola Cougars vs. Volcano Vista Hawks

Cibola is 0-10 against Volcano Vista since April of 2019 but things could change on Tuesday. The Cougars will welcome the Hawks at 4:00 p.m. Cibola is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.

Cibola is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Farmington, who was ranked 14th at the time (Cibola was ranked seventh). The Cougars came out on top against the Scorpions by a score of 18-14 on Friday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Cougars considering their two-run performance the game before.

Leo Lopez looked comfortable as he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Cibola got a massive performance out of Jacob Segotta, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. Those four runs gave Segotta a new career-high. Daniel Kean was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.

Cibola kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 21 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Volcano Vista didn't have quite enough to beat Cleveland on Friday and fell 8-7. The Hawks haven't had much luck with the Storm recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Bradyn Mazuranich was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Josiah Gutierrez, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.

Cibola's victory bumped their record up to 14-6. As for Volcano Vista, their loss dropped their record down to 12-8.

Cibola suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Volcano Vista when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
