Las Cruces had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 34 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Centennial Hawks 40-38. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 45-43 on February 3rd.
Las Cruces got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Bethzy Quinones out in front who posted 11 points and seven steals. Quinones has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. Sofia Herrera was another key player, putting up four points in addition to ten boards, seven assists, and five steals.
Several Hawks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Joy Hunt, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 14 rebounds. Those 14 boards gave Hunt a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kennedy Maestas, who put up nine points.
Las Cruces pushed their record up to 17-8 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.8 points over those games. As for Centennial, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-14.
Las Cruces does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Centennial, they will be playing at home against Gadsden at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Centennial is facing Gadsden at the right time seeing as Gadsden is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
