Basketball Recap: Lakeland Comes Up Short

Lakeland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They had to suffer through a 69-14 loss at the hands of the Deep Creek Hornets. While losing is never fun, the Cavaliers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while the Hornets are ranked 17th).

Alainah Overton was Lakeland's leading scorer, having posted ten points. Miracle Stephens held things down on the boards with six rebounds.

Deep Creek's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alaya Monroe, who posted nine points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan Herbert, who put up ten points and five boards.

Lakeland's loss dropped their record down to 6-17. As for Deep Creek, they are on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 14 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season.

Lakeland will head out on the road to challenge Heritage at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Deep Creek, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ocean Lakes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Ocean Lakes comes in on four and Deep Creek on nine.
