Basketball Recap: Doherty Gets the Win

Doherty won the last time they faced Liberty and things went their way on Friday too. The Spartans walked away with a 61-54 win over the Lancers. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Spartans.

Doherty had a senior duo take command as Gavin Gilbert went 7-for-14 to rack up 16 points along with five boards and four steals and Sean Smith posted 17 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Smith's big performance that evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Acai Biglow was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Doherty was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They are 11-5 when they've passed the ball that well.

Despite the loss, Liberty still got an impressive performance from Cameron Cunningham, who shot 50% from the field en route to 17 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Cunningham has been hot, having posted 15 or more points the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Zach Hoskins, who had eight points.

Doherty's record now sits at 12-9. As for Liberty, the loss snapped their winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 14-7 record.

Doherty didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 64-27 victory against Vista Ridge on the 17th. As for Liberty, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, an 83-44 win against Fountain-Fort Carson on the 19th.
