Football Recap: Cypress Comes Up Short Despite Garrison Manzanarez's Big Defensive Game

Cypress was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 27-22 heartbreaker at the hands of the El Modena Vanguards. While losing is never fun, the Centurions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 263rd, while the Vanguards are ranked 100th).

Despite the defeat, Cypress saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Garrison Manzanarez picked up 3.5 sacks and made six total tackles. Justin Hall also set a new season-high mark in passing yards with 330. Another player making a difference was Matt Rodriguez, who picked up 120 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Even if they lost, Cypress' defense still kept up the pressure with 5.5 sacks. Manzanarez was especially locked on to El Modena's QB and sacked him 3.5 times.

Cypress' loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for El Modena, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.

Cypress does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for El Modena, they will face off against La Habra at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th.
