Softball Recap: Mt. Baker's Victory on Tuesday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Mt. Baker extended their winning streak to three on Tuesday, bumping their season record up to 11-7 in the process. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against the Nooksack Valley Pioneers. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mountaineers have posted against the Pioneers since May 6, 2016.

As for Nooksack Valley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-5. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 14-2 Sedro-Woolley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 74.3% over those games).

For Nooksack Valley's part, Alayna Vanieperen put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. Vanieperen has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run.

In other batting news, Makenzie Likkel and Alayna Dykstra did some serious damage despite the final result: Likkel went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Dykstra went 3-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base. That home run was Likkel's first of the season. Gracie Rutgers was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Mt. Baker is set to square off against their familiar foe Sedro-Woolley at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Nooksack Valley will face off against rival Burlington-Edison at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Pioneers are on a three-game streak of home wins, the Tigers a three-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind.
