Baseball Recap: Saint Mary's Find Success

Saint Mary gave up the first runs on Wednesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 6-2 win over the Pinole Valley Spartans. While the Panthers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Cedric Boardman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Saint Mary's let Damien Nolan and Luca Vargas run wild. Nolan got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI, while Vargas went a perfect 4-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Those four hits gave Vargas a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Logan Donoviel, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Saint Mary's victory bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Pinole Valley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-4.

Saint Mary's will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Spartans: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
