Baseball Recap: Phelps Takes a Loss

Phelps had lost five straight at home, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 2-12-1 to make it six. They lost 16-5 to the Mountain Mission Challengers. The Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Challengers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Mountain Mission, their win bumped their record up to 2-3. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Mountain Mission's part, Alexanda Nyakemori, Jr. made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Nyakemori, Jr. was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, five RBI, and one triple.

In other batting news, Elawi Dawit and Biruk Kifle did most of the damage at the plate: Dawit went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one triple, while Kifle went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. With that strong performance, Dawit is now averaging an impressive 1.4 stolen bases per game. Ezekiel Peters was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Coincidentally, Phelps and Mountain Mission will both be playing East Ridge the next time they take the field. The Hornets will host the Warriors at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the Challengers will head out to face them at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
