Football Recap: Franklin Cougars vs. Chapin Huskies
Franklin took care of business in their home opener on Saturday (and then some). They claimed a resounding 56-14 win over the Chapin Huskies at home. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cougars also won the last time the pair played back in September of 2019.
Ernie Powers went supernova for Franklin, rushing for 136 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries. Powers also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack, forcing a fumble, and making two total tackles. Atreyu DeLaRiva was another key rusher, rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
DeLaRiva wasn't the only one working in the rushing yards department: Franklin was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 264 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 192 rushing yards in seven consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Franklin wouldn't let Chapin keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force four fumbles. It was truly a group effort as Powers, Dylan Contreras, and Emmanuel Lopez picked up one apiece. Joseuberto (JB) Bodoni-Guzman also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making nine total tackles.
Despite the loss, Chapin still got an impressive performance from Daveon Singleton, who picked up 27 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Chapin also got help from Corwon Martin, who showed off his sure hands for 96 receiving yards.
Franklin will face off against Del Valle at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Chapin, they will host Eastwood at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Chapin focused on turnovers this week as team gave up five on Saturday.
