Anthracite recap October 1, 2013
Marian Catholic was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in Anthracite. Earlier in the week, Marian Catholic triumphed over North Schuylkill 27-26.
Mahanoy Area added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Minersville, 47-7. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
William Casella was a force in the backfield as Schuylkill Haven defeated Panther Valley.
Nate Edmonds threw for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was 7-12 with 2 interceptions.
Ian McCole provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Shenandoah Valley fell to Jim Thorpe. He completed 21 passes for 241 yards and also ran for 20 yards. McCole's key target this week was Kayin Herb, who caught 4 passes for 89 yards.
Herb was the best receiver in the league this week as the Blue Devils lost to the Olympians. Herb tallied 4 receptions for 89 yards. John Storm helped Shenandoah Valley's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 62 yards.
The leading receiver in the league this season is Dustin Vandermartin. The Tamaqua star has 10 catches for 291 yards.
An important game coming up in Anthracite this week will be when Tamaqua takes on the Spartans. The Blue Raiders are in third place, while North Schuylkill is in fifth place.
Mahanoy Area moved up to 171 from 221 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Golden Bears were able to move up by besting the Battling Miners 47-7.
