The Clinton Prairie Gophers will take on the West Lafayette Red Devils at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Clinton Prairie is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
Clinton Prairie is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Tri-County just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Monday. They lost 13-6 to the Cavaliers. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Gophers have suffered since April 16, 2024.
Kadie Fearnow made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Brenna Riley, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, West Lafayette got the win against Lafayette Central Catholic on Wednesday by a conclusive 15-5. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won five contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
The team relied heavily on Paola Eifler, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kerrigan Gooden, who went 3-for-4 with three runs.
West Lafayette kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
The victory made it two in a row for West Lafayette and bumps their season record up to 7-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Clinton Prairie, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-3.
West Lafayette's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Clinton Prairie has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.4 hits per game. It's a different story for West Lafayette, though, as they've been averaging 8.7 hits. Given Clinton Prairie's sizable advantage in that area, the Red Devils will need to find a way to close that gap.
Clinton Prairie suffered a grim 22-10 defeat to West Lafayette in their previous matchup back in May of 2023. Can the Gophers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
