Softball Game Preview: James Wood Colonels vs. Strasburg Rams

The James Wood Colonels will take on the Strasburg Rams at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

James Wood's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Kettle Run with a sharp 13-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Colonels in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won six in a row.

Strasburg never got on the board in their matchup on Thursday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Stonewall Jackson on Monday. They were the clear victors by a 10-4 margin over the Generals.

Ava Mayhew was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Strasburg let Camille Greco and Madison Wilkins run wild. Greco went 4-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base, while Wilkins went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most doubles Greco has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kenley Arnold, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Strasburg kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Strasburg pushed their record up to 8-5 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.3 runs over those games. As for James Wood, their victory bumped their record up to 9-4.

James Wood was able to grind out a solid win over Strasburg when the teams last played back in March, winning 4-0. Do the Colonels have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rams turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
