Baseball Recap: Berry Takes a Loss

Berry dropped to 9-10 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They fell just short of the Hubbertville Lions by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Wildcats have suffered since March 10th.

As for Hubbertville, the win (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 16-4. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.2 runs over those games.

For Hubbertville's part, Cole Brand made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). Brand has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

Brand wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Cruz Kizzire, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases Kizzire has posted since back in March. Landon Dodd was another, earning one run and two stolen bases.

Looking ahead, Berry will be playing in front of their home fans against Oakman at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Hubbertville, they are taking a road trip to challenge Lamar County at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
