Baseball Game Recap: Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs vs. Decatur Central Hawks

Franklin Community extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 15-9 in the process. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 7-4 to the Decatur Central Hawks, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. Grizzly Cubs fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Hawks since on Friday.

Wyatt Mitchell made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Landen Basey, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

As for Decatur Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games.

On Decatur Central's side, Luke McWhirter looked comfortable as he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, McWhirter posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.

At the plate, Decatur Central's win was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Brayden Smith, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one double. Zach Losito also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Franklin Community and Decatur Central are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Grizzly Cubs will face off against Columbus East at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Decatur Central, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Avon at 4:30 p.m. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Orioles have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season.
