Softball Preview: Vinton County Vikings vs. Wellston Golden Rockets
Vinton County hasn't had much luck against Wellston recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Vikings will be playing at home against the Golden Rockets at 5:00 p.m.
Vinton County couldn't beat Athens on Monday even though they stacked four runs on them in the first inning. The Vikings fell 10-7 to the Bulldogs. The Vikings have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Wellston waltzed into their game on Wednesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They blew past the Spartans 19-3. That's two games straight that the Golden Rockets have won by exactly 16 runs.
Hannah Potts made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Avery Fain, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple was her first of the season. Raylen Landrum was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
