Baseball Game Preview: Hillsboro Trojans vs. Nickerson Panthers

The Hillsboro Trojans will challenge the Nickerson Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Tuesday, Hillsboro needed a bit of extra time to put away Marion. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 win over the Warriors. Ten seems to be a good number for the Trojans as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Monday as neither Nickerson nor Oxford made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Panthers came out on top against the Wildcats by a score of 8-3. Winning may never get old, but the Panthers sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.

Corbin Shelton and Fallon Rist made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Shelton struck out eight batters over 4.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. Meanwhile, Rist struck out eight batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Those eight strikeouts gave Shelton a new career-high. At the plate, Shelton went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run, while Rist went 2-for-4 with two triples and one RBI. Those RBI were Shelton's first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cale Ruckman, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Chase Welch, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Hillsboro's win bumped their record up to 6-11. As for Nickerson, their victory bumped their record up to 7-13.

Everything went Hillsboro's way against Nickerson in their previous matchup back in May of 2025, as Hillsboro made off with a 13-0 win. Will the Trojans repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
