Mattoon is a perfect 10-0 against Taylorville since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Greenwave will look to defend their home field against the Tornadoes at 4:00 p.m. The timing is sure in Mattoon's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Taylorville has been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
On Wednesday, Mattoon had just enough and edged out Monticello 4-3.
Hanna Griffin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Aylexis Otto was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Kenna Karnes was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Taylorville lost 14-4 to Shelbyville on Wednesday.
Taylorville saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lily Harden, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one triple and one run.
Mattoon is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-14 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Taylorville, their loss dropped their record down to 3-19.
Mattoon's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Greenwave have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Taylorville, though, as they've been averaging only 0.6 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mattoon continue to outrun the ball?
Mattoon came out on top in a nail-biter against Taylorville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 9-8. Do the Greenwave have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tornadoes turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
