Football Game Preview: Providence Grove Patriots vs. Wheatmore Warriors

The Providence Grove Patriots are taking a road trip to challenge the Wheatmore Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Providence Grove is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.

On Friday, Providence Grove didn't have too much trouble with East Davidson as they won 32-14. The Patriots pushed the score to 29-7 by the end of the third, a deficit the Golden Eagles cut but never quite recovered from.

Nick Straughn was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 151 yards and one TD while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Jackson Lawver helped out on the ground, rushing for 84 yards and a rushing touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Providence Grove was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 250 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.

Providence Grove didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Holden Swift, Andrew Thomas, and Conner Haithcock picked up one apiece.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Wheatmore and West Davidson meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Warriors took a 14-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Dragons. Having soared to a lofty 32 points in the game before, the Warriors couldn't push the score so high this time.

Wheatmore's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Providence Grove, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.

Everything went Providence Grove's way against Wheatmore when the teams last played back in November of 2024, as Providence Grove made off with a 43-19 win. In that matchup, the Patriots amassed a halftime lead of 30-6, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
