Softball Recap: Robert C. Byrd Comes Up Short

Robert C. Byrd extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping them down to 12-16. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Buckhannon-Upshur Bucaneers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bucaneers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-5 back in March.

Robert C. Byrd saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Grayce Defazio, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.

As for Buckhannon-Upshur, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games.

On Buckhannon-Upshur's side, Kynnedy Marple made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Marple has posted since back in April. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one triple.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Becca Pastorious, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maddie Tucker also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Coming up, Robert C. Byrd will welcome Hampshire at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Buckhannon-Upshur, they are taking a road trip to challenge Parkersburg South at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bucaneers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Patriots have averaged an impressive 8 runs per game this season.
