Softball Preview: Lake Weir Hurricanes vs. Vanguard Knights

Lake Weir is 2-8 against Vanguard since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Hurricanes will venture away from home to take on the Knights at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Having struggled with eight defeats in a row, Lake Weir turned things around against North Marion on Thursday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Colts a 9-0 shutout. The game was the first time the Hurricanes have beaten the Colts on their field since March 10, 2023.

G Weidenbacher made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Baylee Paparo, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Those hits marked the first that she got this season. Another player making a difference was M Herrington, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

At bat, Davis scored two runs while going 1-for-4, while Horcajo scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Jaelynn Whipple was incredible, firing off three home runs, six RBI, and four runs while going 3-for-4. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Alivia Vance was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Vanguard was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

The win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 2-16. As for Vanguard, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
