Basketball Recap: Palo Verde Comes Up Short

Palo Verde lost against Tombstone back in December of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Palo Verde Titans lost 60-34 to the Tombstone Yellow Jackets. While losing is never fun, the Titans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 106th, while the Yellow Jackets are ranked 27th).

Despite the loss, Palo Verde still got an impressive performance from Gaby Oliver, who shot 4-for-7 from long range and dropped a triple-double on 25 points, 19 boards, and ten blocks. The contest was Oliver's 16th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Thylisia Meza, who posted four points and nine rebounds.

Tombstone was led to victory by Rachel Thursby and Briella Schuller. Thursby earned 15 points along with eight steals and six assists, while Schuller went 9 of 15 on her way to 18 points along with eight boards and five steals. The dominant performance gave Thursby a new career-high in steals. Brooklynn Penrose was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Palo Verde has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Tombstone, their win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1.

Palo Verde wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 68-19 victory against San Miguel on the 4th. As for Tombstone, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 51-17 win against Desert Christian on the 3rd.
