Baseball Recap: Whittier Triumphs

It was a proper cat-fight when Whittier challenged San Jacinto on Saturday. The Whittier Cardinals narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the San Jacinto Tigers 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cardinals have posted since April 26, 2024.

Carl Collins made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off ten hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Ryan Jimenez was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

Whittier is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. San Jacinto's loss dropped their record down to 5-4.

Whittier and San Jacinto could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Whittier (ranked 408th) will meet Wiseburn- Da Vinci (ranked 180th) at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, San Jacinto will square off against Temescal Canyon at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday down 409 places (422 vs. 13).
