Escalon is 9-1 against Hughson since March of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Escalon Cougars will be playing at home against the Hughson Huskies at 4:00 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Escalon has struggled recently with three defeats in a row, while Hughson will arrive with three straight wins.
On Tuesday, Escalon didn't have quite enough to beat Summerville and fell 10-9. Even though they lost, the Cougars' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.2 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
Jayci Trimble stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. She also launched a home run, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ariana Velasco, who scored a run and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-4.
Even though they lost, Escalon lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Hughson posted their closest victory since April 26, 2024 on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Big Valley Christian 14-13.
Kylie Tangney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and eight unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Hughson got a big performance out of Leanne Lopez, who scored three runs while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs Lopez has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Abigail Collins, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Hughson pushed their record up to 6-4-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.7 runs over those games. As for Escalon, their loss dropped their record down to 3-6.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Escalon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Hughson struggles in that department as they've averaged .352. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Escalon came out on top in a nail-biter against Hughson in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 15-14. Does Escalon have another victory up their sleeve, or will Hughson turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
