Softball Recap: Griffith Comes Up Short

Griffith extended their losing streak to four on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 7-4 in the process. They fell 6-3 to the Illiana Christian Vikings. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 4-2 on Monday.

Griffith saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cheyanne Fant, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

As for Illiana Christian, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 5 runs in those games.

On Illiana Christian's side, Cayden Petersen spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. Petersen has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Lydia VanderWoude, who went 1-for-3 with five stolen bases and three runs. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.3 stolen bases per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Emmy Jansma, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Looking ahead, Griffith will be playing at home against Hobart at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Illiana Christian, they will venture away from home to challenge Hanover Central at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
