Baseball Game Preview: Worthington Trojans vs. New Ulm Eagles

Worthington hasn't had much luck against New Ulm recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Trojans will venture away from home to challenge the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Worthington has given up an average of 7.7 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Worthington fell victim to St. Peter and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 11-0 to the Saints. The Trojans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask New Ulm). Everything went their way against Belle Plaine on Tuesday as they made off with a 17-1 victory. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Kolton Achman tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Zach Hubbard, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Dirk Haynes, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

New Ulm's victory was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Worthington, their loss dropped their record down to 5-8.

Worthington suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to New Ulm in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
