Softball Preview: Monterey Dores vs. Salinas Cowboys

Suggested Video

Monterey is on an 11-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Salinas is on a six-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Dores will welcome the Cowboys at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Monterey knows how to get runs on the board -- the squad has finished with ten runs or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Salinas likes a good challenge.

Monterey barely beat Hollister the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Dores blew past the Haybalers 17-2 on Monday. Considering the Dores have won ten matchups by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Ella Myers made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Anaiyah Brown, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with five RBI, three runs, and one triple. What's more, she posted three hits, the most she's had since back in February. Denae Lee was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI and one double.

Monterey kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in six consecutive games.

Meanwhile, after a string of five wins, Salinas' good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of Willow Glen by a score of 2-1.

Abi Jones spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on three hits and racked up eight Ks.

On the hitting side, Salinas saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gigi Rossi, who went 1-for-3 with one double.

Monterey has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-3-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Salinas, their loss dropped their record down to 16-7.

Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Monterey hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Salinas struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.

Monterey came out on top in a nail-biter against Salinas in their previous meeting back in April, sneaking past 4-2. Will the Dores repeat their success, or do the Cowboys have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
