Baseball Game Preview: Sahuaro Cougars vs. Tanque Verde Hawks

Sahuaro is 0-3 against Tanque Verde since March of 2022 but things could change on Tuesday. Sahuaro will look to defend their home field against Tanque Verde at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

Sahuaro took a loss when they played away from home on Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Poston Butte a 1-0 shutout.

The result came thanks to Johnathan Gonzalez's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Sahuaro saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Stephan Arellamo, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Sam Chavez also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Tanque Verde posted their closest win since March 1, 2024 on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over Cholla. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.

Tanque Verde pushed their record up to 8-4-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Sahuaro, their win bumped their record up to 2-8-1.
