Basketball Recap: Southwestern Drops Highest Score of Season Against Valmeyer

Southwestern scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of the Valmeyer Pirates by a score of 66-63. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Friday (56), the Piasa Birds still had to take the loss.

Several Piasa Birds players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ryan Lowis, who shot 4-for-7 from downtown and dropped a double-double on 24 points and 15 rebounds. That's the most points Lowis has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Cason Robinson, who posted 14 points and four steals.

With the defeat, Southwestern broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 8-8. As for Valmeyer, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Southwestern won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against SIUE East St. Louis Charter at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Southwestern has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Valmeyer, they are taking a road trip to square off against New Athens at 7:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025. New Athens knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight contests -- so hopefully Valmeyer likes a good challenge.
