Football Game Preview: Greeneville Greene Devils vs. Sevier County Smoky Bears

The Greeneville Greene Devils are taking a road trip to take on the Sevier County Smoky Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Sevier County will be up against a hot Greeneville squad: the team just extended their winning streak to five. The Greene Devils blew past Sullivan East, posting a 63-0 victory. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Greene Devils' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee football rankings (they are ranked 27th, while the Patriots are ranked 297th).

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Sevier County). They breezed past David Crockett to the tune of 55-14 on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Smoky Bears in their matchups with the Pioneers: they've now won three in a row.

Greeneville better keep an eye on Cooper Newman. He was instrumental in Sevier County's win, throwing for 123 yards and three TDs while completing 81.8% of his passes. What's more, Newman racked up 156.4 passer rating, the most he's had since back in October of 2024. Bryson Headrick also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.

Sevier County's run defense was locked in: David Crockett could only muster 1.8 yards per carry. While six picked up at least five total tackles, Parker Newman stood above the rest. He made five total tackles and defended one pass in addition to snagging two interceptions which he returned for a touchdown. Sevier County's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.3.

Sevier County didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Newman picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. Sevier County received some extra help from Joey Galazin, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Greeneville's record now sits at 5-0. As for Sevier County, their record is now 4-0.
