Basketball Recap: Severance Falls Despite Big Games from Christian Powell and Brett Varney

Severance was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 50-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Timnath Cubs.

Severance's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Brett Varney, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten boards, and Christian Powell, who posted 13 points. What's more, Varney also racked up two steals, the most he's had since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cannon Rank, who had 11 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Severance smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Timnath only pulled down three offensive boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Timnath to victory, but perhaps none more so than Max Roselle, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Hemme, who went 5 of 6 on his way to 12 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Severance's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-5. As for Timnath, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.

Severance will square off against Thompson Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Thompson Valley is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 63.4 points per game this season. As for Timnath, they will challenge Berthoud at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Timnath also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 62.5 points per game.
